Unveiling Precious Metal Clay: A Medium of Versatility and Ingenuity
Welcome to the captivating world of Precious Metal Clay, where artistry meets innovation in the most enchanting way possible. I invite you to explore the intriguing process behind this special clay and the unique approach that sets my work apart.
What Drew Me In:
The journey into precious metal clay began with a fascination for its unparalleled versatility. What truly captured my imagination was the fact that this clay allowed me to create in silver without the need for soldering. This was huge, because in the beginning I didn't know how to solder and I didn't have the space to set anything up for it.
The Artistic Sanctuary:
Within my expansive workspace, a realm of creativity takes shape. Armed with a variety of shaping and sanding tools,I meticulously craft my designs. Some embellishments start with hand-drawn concepts, which are then refined using digital software. But, what makes my work truly extraordinary is my connection to nature. Leaves, tree bark, and other organic elements are used to create unique molds that breathe life into my jewelry.
The Creative Alchemy:
The journey through precious metal clay involves a careful process of rolling sections perfectly flat at a specific thickness. I use a Curio machine to etch some of my more intricate designs into the clay. But the artistry doesn't stop there. Countless hours are dedicated to the delicate process of sanding and refining making sure each piece is up to my quality standard.
The Fiery Transformation:
My kiln plays a crucial role in my work. My Paragon kiln, heated to a scorching 1675 degrees, is where the magic truly unfolds. Firing sterling silver clay pieces takes time and precise controlled ramping and cooling cycles. This alchemical process ensures that the organic binders are burned away, leaving behind pure, solid metal treasures.
Signature Techniques:
Within the world of precious metal clay, I have cultivated signature techniques that sets my work apart. One such technique involves pressing and then burning away four-leaf clovers, leaving behind their luck and imprint on the fired silver.
The Fusion of Mediums:
Sterling silver clay isn't the sole star of the show; it's a collaborative medium. I use it to craft embellishments and components that seamlessly integrate into my sheet metal and wirework. This fusion of techniques results in pieces that are both intricate and harmonious.
A World of Possibilities:
My process is a testament to the boundless potential of this clay. From the meticulous crafting of clay to the transformative kiln firing, each step is an intuitive dance. Nature's influence, symbolic motifs, and innovative techniques converge to produce exquisite pieces that tell a story of creativity and craftsmanship.
