Turquoise is one of the first ever gemstones to be mined, with beads on record dating back to 5000 B.C. Crusaders discovered this vibrant stone in Turkey.  The name turquoise actually comes from the French word turquois, which means Turkish. It is a relatively soft stone registering a 5-6 on the Mohs harndess scale.  Often times lower grade rough needs to be stabilized to enhance it's strength and durability.  This is done through a process where the stone is put in a vacuum chamber to force epoxy to fill in cracks and imperfections.

Several different cultures around the world have revered this beautiful stone throughout history.  It is the national stone of Persia.  Greece and Egypt alike have tombs dripping in this protective aqua colored gem.

Indeginous Symbolism

Indeginous Americans hold turquoise in very high spiritual and symbolic esteem. They regard these precious stones as carrying male and female energies based on their color. A stone that veers more toward blue hold more masculine energy and is associated with Father Sky. It will carry a more yang forward, uplifting and action oriented energy. Stones that hold more of a green shade are connected to Mother Earth. Their energy is more yin forward, grounded calm and restful energy.

Metaphysical and Healing Properties

I do believe that the energies that each individual stone possesses is unique and tied to it's color. As stated briefly above to be either masculine or feminine dominant. Turquoise does contain both energies of yin and yang, but one will be slightly more apparent than the other. This is an excellent stone for meditation practices. It is considered a master healer and a bridge between the spiritual and physical. So when used during meditation, it will assist in keeping you grounded. Associated with the throat chakra, it fosters honest and clear communication. When it comes to the third eye chakra it will connect you deeper to your intuition. Turquoise promotes independent thinking and action and is a great stone for problem solving. Throughout the ages it has been widely known as a powerful stone of protection. There is lore stating that it has even chasnged color as a warning of impending danger or illness. As far as illness, there could be some truth to it. As it is such a porous stone, the possibility of changing color by way of absorbing skin oils is not that far fetched. But, don't go thinking it will glow or go from bright blue to black if danger looms.

Ways to Use Turquoise

Try putting a turquoise tumble or nugget under your pillow with the intention to help you connect to and remember your dreams. That way any guidance you receive will remain with you after you wake up. Wearing a turquoise necklace will boost and clear your throat chakra making communication with others a breeze. In meditation place turquoise over your third eye or throat chakra. When you place it over your third eye the pathway to your higher self and intuition will be cleansed and opened. Use it over your throat chakra when you feel like you are not being heard or if you have difficulty expressing your truth. Carry a tumbled piece of turquoise in your pocket or purse as a protection talisman.
